For the past 2 months i've been immersed in my new hobby of aquarium
keeping. I current maintain 3 tanks: 12 gallon Marineland Eclipse, 20
gal long and a 2.5G mini bow.
The Eclipse houses 1 male betta, 4 rasbora heteromorpha or harlequin
fish, 3 corydoras schwartzi, otocinclus affinis.
The 20L has 1 Dario dario, 3 female betta splendens, 2 trichopsis
pumilis or sparkling gouramis and 1 male guppy.
There is some java moss in the 2.5 g. Of the flora there is anubias,
java fern, java moss, egeria, and sag. After a few weeks, brown algae
has developed which I eliminate with a acrylic algae pad. During cycling
I lost 2 furcata rainbow fish in the 12G. Apparently they needed salt
and I didn't add any to my planted tank. I also got 2 guppies from a guy
on Craigslist but 1 died, a large female and the little male survives in
my 20L tank. I bought 2 fancy male guppies from 6th avenue Aquarium but
they too died.
I finally cycled my 12G with some rasbosa heteromorpha, a good hardy
fish. I added the male betta to the mix and all seems well. The betta
had recovered in the 2.5G from fin rot treated with 3 doses of
tetracycline.
My favorite stores in SF to fish shop are: Ocean aquarium and fairy
discus place. Both are run down and family owned. I'll post more later
